Campaign Extended
We are extending this campaign, as the need for emergency relief for affected persons continues, and increases in urgency. Our partners at Tropical Focus immediately began to administer emergency relief to displaced persons camps, but report that the situation has escalated and even more families are affected as violent civil unrest continues in the Kisumu area. We will send funds for emergency relief – provision of food, water, and domestic supplies – February 10.
First appeal:
Kenyan colleagues of GlobalEyes have asked that we appeal for support for families in the community that were affected by the post election violence, but are unable to seek assistance from relief agencies.
On 11 January 2008, Tobias, director of Tropical Focus for Rural Development wrote:
A case has arisen which requires some urgent attention. There are victims of the Kenyan post election conflict that are not getting any attention. Several relief organizations came in support of people displaced, but there is a group of victims who were employed by those displaced who are now walking around villages begging for food. One man was found walking some 10 km from where he used to work and was directed to our office yesterday. He told us his case and it is quite extreme. His employer’s business was burnt down, he does not know where the employer went, he is HIV/AIDS positive, has 2 kids, and his wife died of HIV. He is being threatened by the landlord to vacate because he did not pay rent last week. We feel we should assist him and his children (twins aged 2 years). Kisumu was highly affected by the conflicts with several business people being forced out of the region. There are about 25 other similar families in the same extreme predicament who need some assistance.
This will be a short-term fundraising goal, as the need is so very urgent; we will not set a goal amount, as the need is endless.
As always, funds raised will go directly to those we are working to help with $0 overhead. GlobalEyes is a 501©(3) not-for-profit, and all donations are fully tax deductible.
Many thanks to all who donated to this urgent cause. Funds will be sent immediately and a report with photos and details of exactly how funds were spent will follow.
If you would like to further contribute to this still very urgent cause, please visit the donate page on our website and under the single donation section, click the make a donation button.
